Vijay Singh shot a final-round three-under-par 69 to hold off a charging
Stewart Cink and win the 84 Lumber Classic.
It was his third straight victory and tour-best eighth of the season.
With a 15-under 273 overall, Singh edged Cink, who fired a 65 to finish one
stroke back. The winner led by four shots with five holes to play, which proved
to be enough.
On a remarkable roll over the last two months, Singh has won five of his last
six tournaments. He overtook Tiger Woods for the top ranking in the world
following a victory in the Deutsche Bank Classic earlier this month.
The 41-year-old Singh collected £419,000 to push his 2004 earnings to a
staggering £5,237,372, which broke Woods' record of £5.089million set four years
ago. Singh has won more than £9.4million over the last two years.
Woods, who has won just once this year, did not push Singh for the top spot
here, withdrawing on Tuesday due to fatigue on the heels of last week's Ryder
Cup.
Chris DiMarco, who entered the final round two strokes behind Singh, shot a 70
and was among four players to finish three shots off the pace. Pat Perez, Zach
Johnson and Jonathan Byrd also finished at 276.
KJ Choi, who fired a final-round 65, and Duffy Waldorf were four shots back.
Jose Maria Olazabal, who missed the cut in last week's Valero Texas Open,
rallied with a final-round 65 to finish among the group at 10 under.
