Woody Austin bounced back from a bogey on the final hole of regulation play to
birdie the first hole of a sudden-death play-off with Tim Herron and win the
Buick Championship at the TPC at River Highlands.
Austin, 40, shot a four-under-par 66 for his first PGA Tour victory since the
1995 Buick Open, which he also won in a play-off.
The play-off hole was the par-four 18th, where Herron pulled his drive left
into deep rough but managed a two-putt par, forcing Austin to make his putt.
Austin drained a six-foot birdie to win for the first time in 274 events.
Herron and Austin entered the final round tied for sixth. Herron forced the
play-off with a birdie on the final hole, bouncing back from a double-bogey six
on 17 that seemed to doom his chances of victory.
Both Austin and Herron made their moves on the back nine as other contenders
faltered. Austin birdied five of the first six holes coming in. Meanwhile,
Herron's final nine holes were a bit more adventurous.
He went birdie-birdie-bogey before recording an eagle on the par-five 13th.
Herron also sandwiched his double on 17 with birdies on 16 and 18.
Fred Funk entered the final round with a one-stroke lead but bogeyed four of
five holes on the back nine and finishing with an even-par 70.
Tom Pernice Jnr (67) and Zach Johnson (66) finished in a tie for third with
Funk at nine-under 271.
First-round leader Corey Pavin was unable to get anything going and shot an
even-par 70. He finished tied for sixth with Matt Gogel and Jason Bohn.
