Steve Flesch made his 37th birthday a special one.
Cheered on by his wife and two young daughters, Flesch carded a
three-under-par 67 to post a one-shot victory over Chad Campbell at the
Colonial.
It was the second career win for the Cincinnati native, who completed 72 holes
at 11-under 269. His other victory came at the HP Classic of New Orleans last
year.
Flesch, overcoming a bogey at number 17, became the first player to win on his
birthday since David Edwards in 1993. His previous best finish this year was a
tie for third at the FBR Open in early February. Flesch tied for fifth last week
at the Wachovia Classic.
Campbell began the final round tied for the lead with Flesch and Brian Gay,
but faltered down the stretch, playing the 12th through 17th holes in two-over.
With no chance to win, he birdied number 18.
Stephen Ames finished alone in third at 271, two strokes ahead of Craig Perks.
Robert Gamez, Skip Kendall, Tim Petrovic and Bo Van Pelt tied for fifth at 274.
Gray struggled to a 75 and dropped into a tie for 14th, eight shots behind
Flesch.
