PARRY GRABS PLAY-OFF VICTORY

Craig Parry played the shot of the year to win a play-off for the Ford Championship at Doral.

The Australian holed a six-iron from 176 yards at the first extra hole, the par-four 18th, to beat a stunned Scott Verplank.

Parry pumped his right first, threw his club into the air and hugged his brother and caddie Glenn.

"I guess he was supposed to win," said Verplank, who broke into a smile of resignation when he saw Parry's ball disappear.

The pair finished the four rounds level at 17 under par on 271 at Doral's "Blue Monster" course - one shot ahead of South Africa's Retief Goosen.

Parry's shot is destined to be shown on golf's highlight reels for years to come and he has his brother to thank for talking him into hitting a six-iron.

"I was going to hit a five-iron and he goes, 'no, six-iron is perfect'," Parry admitted. "I was a little pumped up, so I knew it was going to go a little bit further than usual.

"I knew it was going to be within four or five feet. When it landed, seeing it on the green and seeing it trickle, and then the crowd going absolutely nuts, I knew it was in the hole."

The victory gives him a fighting chance of qualifying for next year's Masters.

To be exempt, he has to be ranked in the world's top 50, or the top 10 on the PGA Tour money list, at the end of this month.

This was his first start of the year on the PGA Tour, and he jumps to 13th on the money list.

Joe Durant carded a final round 68 to miss the play-off by a stroke.

Meanwhile, David Toms missed a short putt on the last and dropped into a tie for fourth alongside Bernhard Langer, Gene Sauers and KJ Choi.

Phil Mickelson, who started the day two shots behind Parry, shot a 74 to match his worst round of the year and dropped tie for 24th place.
