Heath Slocum edged Australian Aaron Baddeley by a stroke to win the Chrysler
Classic of Tucson.
After Baddeley bogeyed the 18th hole, Slocum claimed his first PGA Tour title
and the 540,000 US dollars (£288,000) top prize, the largest of his career.
"I am very, very excited," he said. "I would have loved to have made that
putt on the last hole to end on a birdie. At the same time, I feel like I hit
the shots that I needed to get there and maybe apply a little pressure."
Baddeley made his first three-putt in the 72-hole tournament at the 18th. But
it didn't take away from Slocum's joy.
"It felt great," Slocum said. "The thing of it was it was a slugfest and we
were feeding off of each other. We got off to good starts, back and forth. It is
just too bad it ended the way it did with a three-putt bogey.
Baddeley said: "Obviously, I am a little disappointed. We played great, both
of us, and I knew it ended up being the two of us.
"I was surprised, I thought more guys were going to hang in with us. We both
played really good, shot for shot."
Slocum fired a seven-under-par 65 to finish at 22-under 266. Baddeley carded a
66 and ended up at 267, settling for the 324,000 US dollars (£173,000) second
prize.
South Africa's Rory Sabbatini, Harrison Frazar and Australia's Mark Hensby
shared third place at 18-under 270 over the 7,109-yard, par-72 Omni Tucson
National Golf Club.
