Jonathan Kaye put together a run of four birdies on the back nine to keep pace
with Chris DiMarco and watched his playing partners crash on the bogey rocks in
the final round of the FBR Open.
"Everybody is out here to win," said Kaye after his second career win. "And
I was fortunate enough to get some of the bounces that made a difference. I am
just ecstatic to be on top."
DiMarco moved into contention with birdies on the first six holes on the back
nine. But Kaye matched the last four and went on to par the final three holes
for a four-under-par 67 that gave him a four-round total of 18-under 266.
That was enough to hold off DiMarco, who bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes for a
two-under 69 that left him at 268. It also was plenty to turn back Phil
Mickelson, who led with seven holes to play but bogeyed four of the last five
holes for a one-over 72.
"It is dejecting when you have a chance to win and you don't," said
Mickelson, who won last week's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
"But I would rather be in that position (to win). Even though I didn't come
through, it was a lot of fun."
DiMarco was not nearly as understanding. "I played absolutely miserable the
first nine," he said.
"I was two-over, and then I kind of got hot on the back nine, six birdies in
a row. And on the 16th hole I hit a nine-iron as pure as I can and it comes up
short and goes in the bunker on the down slope. The best I could do was knock it
30 feet past the hole."
Kaye won for the first time since the 2003 Buick Classic, and moved to the top
of the money list for the first time in his career.
"I hit all the shots that I needed to and Chris played awesome," Kaye said.
"He had just one bad shot at the same time on 16 and it kind of opened the door
for me."
Defending champion Vijay Singh shot a 66 to finish tied for third at 269 with
Steve Flesch, who also shot 66. Singh recorded his 11th consecutive top-10
finish, the longest active streak on the PGA Tour.
"It's nice to be finishing in the top 10," Singh said.
"But it's also nice to win. I just want to win and maybe that's why I am
playing so well."
Duffy Waldorf fired a 65 and tied Masters champion Mike Weir for fifth at
271.
The FBR Open set an attendance record for Super Bowl Sunday with 90,768 fans,
surpassing the 1995 mark of 74,369.
