Vijay Singh was crowned the winner of the PGA Tour money list as Chad Campbell
won the US Tour Championship in Houston.
Only a victory for nearest challenger Tiger Woods could have denied
40-year-old Singh his first Arnold Palmer Award.
That was never really on the cards however and instead Campbell claimed his
first tour title in fine style at Champions Golf Club.
Campbell, who led by one going into the final round after a stunning 61
yesterday, carded a closing 68 for a 16-under-par total of 268.
The 29-year-old, who was born and still lives in Texas, claimed the first
prize of 1.08million US dollars after three second-place finishes earlier in the
season, including the USPGA Championship.
Charles Howell birdied the last to claim second place outright on 13 under,
one ahead of Retief Goosen, the former European number one having birdied three
of the last four holes.
"This is what I was working for this whole year," Campbell said. "I'm just
happy to get my first win."
Singh, whose share of fifth made it 11 top 10s in his last 12 events, said:
"I'm really proud of what I have accomplished this year. Especially at my age
it's a great accomplishment.
"I still have to improve on a lot of things, you never stop working. After
the Presidents Cup I will look back and see what I need to work on."
The only thing missing from Singh's CV this year was a third major title, and
he added on Sky Sports 2: "I'd like to win a major next year if I can.
"I had good opportunities to do well this year but never really pulled it
off."
Woods stumbled to a final round 74 and one-over-par total of 285, finishing
26th of the 31-strong field.
Darren Clarke finished 18th after closing with a round of 73.
