Shigeki Maruyama led throughout the final round on his way to a five-stroke
victory at the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro.
Maruyama teed off with a three-shot lead over Brad Faxon, who never cut the
margin to fewer than two shots on a delightful autumn afternoon at Forest Oaks.
Displaying a cool nerve with the putter, Maruyama recorded six birdies and one
bogey for a five-under-par 67.
He finished at 22-under 266, a stroke off the tournament record, while Faxon
shot a 69 for second place at 271.
Maruyama, 34, has now won three times on the PGA Tour. He won nine times in
Japan before coming to the United States in 2000.
Faxon was the only player to exert any sort of pressure on Maruyama.
Matt Gogel (68) won the battle for third place, a distant seven shots back.
Maruyama is by far the most successful Japanese player ever on the PGA Tour.
Isao Aoki is the only other Japanese winner, claiming the 1983 Hawaiian Open.
Maruyama also is one of only four players to win on the PGA Tour each of the
past three years, along with Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk and Justin Leonard.
