JL Lewis closed with a career-low and course-record 10-under-par 62 on a
marathon final day to capture the 84 Lumber Classic of Pennsylvania.
Lewis' 22-under 266 total established a new tournament record and earned him
£437,000 in prize money. He moved to 17th on the money list - in position for
the Tour Championship - with £1.16million.
Frank Lickliter II, Australian Stuart Appleby and Tim Petrovic shared second
place at 20-under 268, collecting £181,000 each. Cameron Beckman, Swede Jesper
Parnevik and Rocco Mediate tied for fifth at 271.
Lewis broke the Nemacolin Woodlands Mystic Rock Course record of 64, which was
set and matched by several players over the first three rounds.
He was 14 under for the day. "When I started this tournament, I had
aspirations of doing well," said Lewis, who broke Robert Allenby's tournament
record of 19-under 269.
"I was behind, but I was striking the ball well and I was able to keep my
wits."
Lewis started the day in a tie for 12th and moved up only one spot following
the first 18 holes of the day.
But he eagled the fourth hole in the final round, backing up a 90-yard lob
wedge into the cup.
"I had about 90 yards to go and I had a clean lie in the rough," he said.
"I knew I had plenty of room to hit the ball into the middle of the green and
let it roll down to the hole."
After playing the first five holes in four under, Lewis settled in with three
straight pars.
But he birdied the ninth and 11, 12, 13 and 14, sinking nothing longer than 12
feet.
Lewis dropped a stroke at the 15th, but he birdied the par-five 16th and the
18th, making an eight-foot putt to seal the win.
The field was forced to play 36 holes on the final day after rain washed out
all of the second round on Friday.
