Bob Tway barely managed a smile as his bogey putt dropped into the hole for
his first win since 1995.
Tway defeated Brad Faxon on the third play-off hole to win the Canadian Open
in Hamilton, Ontario, and end a victory drought that had lasted 213
tournaments.
After both players parred the first play-off hole, Faxon had a chance to win
at the second but missed a five-foot birdie putt.
The advantage seemed to be with Tway as he hit his approach 18 feet from the
pin, but Faxon blasted out of a fairway bunker.
Tway missed his birdie attempt, then watched Faxon keep the play-off going.
The duo returned to the par-four 18th for the third play-off hole and Faxon
was in trouble from the start but chipped to 15 feet only to miss a bogey putt.
Tway put his third shot on the green and two-putted for a bogey and his eighth
career win.
"I know it's been eight years since I've won," Tway said. "I thought last
night that anything could happen. It was a good round under the
circumstances."
Tway and Faxon finished 72 holes at eight under par on 272.
Tway fired his second straight four-under 66 while Faxon carded a 67.
Tom Pernice had the lead midway through the final round and pulled back to
eight under at the 17th hole.
But he bogeyed the 18th, missing a 15-foot par putt to fall out of the
play-off into third place.
Hidemichi Tanaka of Japan took a two-shot lead into the final round but it
disappeared before he teed off as the field came charging back.
And with 23 players scoring in the 60s, he struggled to a one-over 71 and
shared fourth place with Korea's KJ Choi at six under on 274.
Fred Funk had a hole-in-one at the 224-yard sixth hole to get to eight under,
then bogeyed the next three holes and never recovered.
Fiji's Vijay Singh finished with a 68 to tie for sixth place.
The world's fourth-ranked player never recovered from an opening-round 75.
Jay Don Blake recorded the tournament's first hole-in-one at the 224-yard 13th
and also eagled the 17th en route to a 65 but finished seven strokes back on
279.
Masters champion Mike Weir, an Ontario native, closed with a 69 and finished
five shots back on 277.
