Kenny Perry's stunning streak of form
continued on Sunday when he won the Greater Milwaukee Open, a tournament which
has always figured high in his affections.
Having finished third, fifth and fourth in the previous three years at the
event, he won the tournament for the first time.
And with his win, achieved by finishing 12 under par, he stretched a
remarkable sequence of results.
The 42-year-old Perry was playing his first tournament since his sensational
three-start run which included consecutive wins at the Colonial and Memorial and
a tie for third at the US Open.
He made birdies on four of the first 12 holes and improved to 12-under for the
tournament, one stroke better than Steve Allan.
He had birdies on the sixth, eighth, ninth and 11th holes.
Allan hit back though, and moved level with Perry, as the former outright
leader began to show signs of fragility.
It was a struggle for Perry down the back nine, and Allan moved into the lead,
looking set to put an end to Perry's winning run on the domestic tour.
There was more drama to come though, with Perry taking advantage of the two
par-fives on the way home to put himself back in control.
"I love those last four holes and when I got to 17 I thought: 'Birdie,
birdie, we win the golf tournament,"' said Perry on Sky Sports.
Perry found deep rough just beyond the green on the 18th, but a sweetly judged
chip rolled to within a couple of feet of the hole, and he measured the birdie
putt perfectly to clinch the title.
"I always wanted to have to putt to win a golf tournament and that feels good
to me," he said.
"I had a big lead in my other events and I wanted to see what it was like
coming from behind.
"I had nothing to lose. All those other guys were trying to win their first
of the year, I've already won.
"I played good today. I had more golf game today than I had the first three
days."
Australian Allan finished a shot back on 11-under, the same score as American
Heath Slocum.
Perry added: "Hopefully I can keep the momentum running and go over there and
be competitive at the British Open next week."
