Davis Love III secured victory at The Heritage in Hilton Head Island, South
Carolina, with a birdie on the fourth extra hole of a play-off with Woody
Austin.
Both finished on 13 under 271 for the tournament after Love closed with a
four-under-par 67 and Austin carded a 68.
David Gossett, Geoff Ogilvy, Chris Riley and Hal Sutton were all tied for
third after finishing on 12 under.
World number four Love also won here in 1998, 1992, 1991 and 1987. He is the
only player in the 35-year history of the event to win it more than three
times.
Austin twice threw away chances to claim his second career title, lipping out
a 5ft birdie putt on the second sudden-death hole and a three-footer for par on
the third - both of which would have given him the victory.
It was a heartbreaking four holes for Austin, who suffered a meltdown of
another kind here in 1997, when he bent a putter over his head following a bad
putt on the 14th hole.
Austin settled for his best finish on the PGA Tour since winning the 1995
Buick Open.
Ernie Els blew a two-stroke lead with a double-bogey, bogey, bogey finish,
eventually sharing 10th place on 10 under.
Collated final totals in the the Heritage Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
