Scott Hoch beat Jim Furyk at the third playoff hole on Monday to take victory in the Ford Championship at Doral.
The two players had to come back to decide first place after
the playoff was halted by darkness on Sunday night.
Hoch refused to putt at the second extra hole and Furyk also declined, much to
the chagrin of the gallery at the Doral Resort's Blue Monster course.
Both players had good birdie chances after they had tied the lead at
17-under-par 271, but Hoch said it was simply too dark to read the line.
Hoch proved his decision to wait was justified when he holed his putt for birdie when play resumed on Monday, but Furyk followed him in to stay alive.
But at the third extra hole, the par four 18th, Hoch birdied again to take the title.
At 47, Hoch became the oldest player to win a tour event since Tom Watson (48) won
the 1998 Colonial.
The victory moved him up to fifth place on the US Money List with $1,110,733 while Furyk climbed to sixth.
