Bob Burns' fairy tale week came in an appropriate place.
Playing in the shadow of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, Burns claimed his first
career PGA Tour win on Sunday night, defeating Tiger Woods and a host of others in a
shootout at the Disney Classic.
With Woods making a typical charge and Chris DiMarco among the elite players
in contention, Burns won for the first time in 173 career starts, having
finished a career-best third at the Kemper Open in May.
A 34-year-old Californian who enjoys brewing beer, Burns began the day a
stroke off the lead but carded a bogey-free seven-under-par 65 that included
four birdies on the first five holes of the back nine.
At 25-under 263, Burns matched the best 72-hole score in relation to par this
season, set by Woods at the American Express Championship. Eight others finished
at 21-under or better.
"I'm not really a go-low specialist," an elated Burns said.
"So this was kind of a weird week for me."
It also was unusual, considering Woods grabbed a share of the lead midway
through a sensational nine-under 63 in a typical final-round charge but ended up
third at 23-under 265.
"Well, thankfully, it's only 72 holes," said Burns, who isn't among the top
150 in the world rankings, "because give him about nine more holes and he
probably would have had it."
Burns pocketed the 666,000 US dollars for the top prize, which moves him into
the top 50 on the money list.
He also qualified for next year's Mercedes Championships and earned a two-year
exemption.
DiMarco, the third-round leader, sank a long birdie putt at the closing hole
to cap a 68 and finish alone in second at 24-under 264.
Woods was another stroke back, followed by Hidemichi Tanaka of Japan and Tim
Herron at 266.
