Spike McRoy recorded his first career win after rallying from a seven-stroke
deficit to post a one-shot victory over Fred Funk at the BC Open in New York.
McRoy, the 2000 Buy.com Tour Player of the Year, fired a seven-under-par 65
for a 72-hole total of 19 under on 269.
Prior to this tournament, McRoy's best finish in a PGA event was a tie for
third at the 2001 Kemper Open.
His best performance this year had been a tie for sixth at the Tucson Open,
after missing the cut in eight of his first 12 starts.
Funk, who won this event in 1996, birdied the final three holes for a
five-under 67 to clinch second place.
"It was fun to get back in the hunt," said Funk. "Nice to finish
birdie-birdie here."
Cliff Kresge, this year's leading money-winner on the Buy.com Tour, had a
10-under 62 to climb from a tie for 47th into a tie for third with Brian
Henninger, Robert Gamez, Glen Day and third-round leader Shaun Micheel.
Micheel, who also was seeking his first PGA Tour win, took a three-shot lead
into the final round but struggled to a two-over 74.
