Jeff Sluman just missed out on equalling the record for the lowest total at
the Milwaukee Open as he won the title for the second time in five years.
Sluman carded a three-under-par 68 at the Brown Deer Park Golf Club, giving
him a 72-hole total of 23-under 261 - the second lowest in the 35-year history
of the event.
The 44-year-old, who will miss The Open for the fifth time in eight seasons,
beat Steve Lowery and Tim Herron by four shots but was still one stroke behind
the 24-under total recorded by Loren Roberts when he won the event in 2000.
Sluman, winner here in 1995 with a total of 265, said: "It's been very good
to me. I couldn't be happier. I haven't played very well this year, but I
thought my game was coming around."
Because he failed to qualify for the third major of the season, Sluman will
try to defend his title at next week's BC Open.
Lowery, the course record-holder, had begun the day just two strokes back but
struggled to a one-under 70 and settled for his fourth runner-up finish in 15
seasons.
Herron tied Lowery at 19-under 265, a stroke better than Kenny Perry and two
ahead of Joey Sindelar, Greg Chalmers of Australia and JP Hayes.
Sluman's four-shot win was the most decisive on tour since mid-May, when Nick
Price won the Colonial by five strokes.
