Bob Estes shot a bogey-free one-under-par 70 to record a one-stroke victory
over Rich Beem in the Kemper Open in Potomac, Maryland.
It was the eighth time in his career that Estes has held or shared the lead
after 54 holes and gone on to win.
By avoiding the series of disasters that plagued his closest competitors,
Estes won his first PGA Tour event of the season after finishing at 11 under par
on 273.
Beem, Justin Leonard and Steve Elkington were all in contention before hitting
into the bunker at the par-three 17th.
All three did no better than a bogey, which worked out perfectly for Estes,
who recorded his lone birdie on the par-four 14th.
Bob Burns, the third-round co-leader with Estes, had a far more eventful, but
less successful, day.
He had a hole-in-one at the 11th but lost his chance of victory with a
double-bogey at the 16th.
Beem, the 1999 champion, shot a 69 and was alone in second at 274.
Elkington carded a 69 and Burns had a 72 to share third place on 275, while
Jonathan Kaye (69) and Leonard (70) finished tied for fifth on 276.
