Justin Leonard won the Worldcom Classic despite failing to pick up a birdie
during his final round at the Harbour Town Golf Links.
Leonard also missed a one-foot putt on the back nine, but his 14-under-par
total was still enough to beat Heath Slocum by one shot.
After carrying a three-stroke advantage into the final round, Leonard had 16
pars and two late bogeys en route to a two-over-par 73.
Slocum blew a one-stroke lead after double bogeying the 16th hole as the
top-three finishers - including Phil Mickelson - failed to crack 70 on a windy
day.
A seven-time winner on the PGA Tour, Leonard had never finished higher than
30th in four previous visits to Hilton Head.
Slocum began the day four shots off Leonard's pace but carded a 71 for second
place, his best finish in 18 PGA Tour appearances. He missed the cut in seven of
his first 10 starts this season.
Mickelson was one shot further back to match his third-place finish at last
week's Masters, while Bernhard Langer was another stroke adrift.
