Jose Maria Olazabal carded a final round seven-under-par 65, including birdies
at four of the last six holes, to complete a superb one-stroke victory at the
Buick Invitational.
Coming off a fifth-placed finish last week at Pebble Beach, Olazabal claimed
his sixth career PGA Tour victory and the 648,000 first prize.
The Spaniard, who also won the Omega Hong Kong Open on the European Tour in
December, had not captured a PGA Tour event since the 1999 Masters - the second
of his two titles at Augusta.
Mark O'Meara and JL Lewis finished one shot off the pace with John Daly -
another two-time major winner - alone in fourth at 11-under.
Tiger Woods carded a 66 on Sunday and finished in a three-way tie for fifth at
10-under.
"I feel like I played very, very well over the weekend," said Olazabal, who
shot a third round 67 after only making the halfway cut right on the mark of
one-under.
Olazabal played four groups ahead of third-round co-leaders Lewis, O'Meara,
and Jerry Kelly, and birdied the 551-yard par five 18th nearly an hour before
Lewis' group reached the green.
Olazabal and Lewis both laid up on the last but with vastly different
results.
Olazabal hit a lob wedge to three feet for his birdie while Lewis three-putted
from 40 feet after missing an eight-foot par putt to force a play-off.
"I kind of got a bad break, then I choked," Lewis said.
The bad break was hitting his six iron second shot too close to Devlin's
Billabong, the pond that guards the 18th, forcing him to play a conservative
approach to the green.
"I just embarrassed myself. What can I say?" added Lewis.
