Jerry Kelly claimed his first PGA Tour victory after sinking a two-foot birdie
putt at the 18th hole to hold off John Cook by a stroke in the Sony Open in
Hawaii.
Kelly never relinquished the lead he earned on Saturday, shooting a level-par
70 as the chasing pack faltered.
He also avenged a disappointing loss to Cook at last year's Reno-Tahoe Open.
Kelly finished the first full-field event of the season at 14 under par on
266.
The 35-year-old, who went to college on an ice hockey scholarship, said: "It
is burning me up inside right now. I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight."
Cook shot a 69 but had to settle for second place on 267.
He tied for the lead at 13 under with a birdie at the 18th but could not
overcome a bogey at the par-three 17th, where his backswing was affected by a
ringing cell phone.
He said: "I had a little miscue on 17 that I won't go into. But we're happy
for Jerry."
Jay Don Blake was third - his best finish since 1998 - on 269, while David
Toms, reigning Rookie of the Year Charles Howell III and Matt Kuchar tied for
fourth, a further shot behind.
