David Toms continued his meteoric rise by claiming his third title of the
season and second in a row at the USPGA Tour's Michelob Championship.
Toms shot a three-under-par 68 at the Kingsmill Resort to hold off Kirk
Triplett by a stroke and become the fourth player to win the event in
consecutive seasons since it began in 1968.
A three-and-a-half-foot par putt at the 18th hole gave Toms a 72-hole total of
15-under 269 - good for his third title since May, his seventh in the past three
years and the eighth of his career.
"I feel better now that I have been able to win a good many tournaments,"
said 34-year-old Toms.
"So obviously when I get in contention, I feel like I am going to perform."
This week's win was especially surprising to Toms, who missed the cut at the
Texas Open last week, a month and a half after claiming his first major title at
the PGA Championship.
"It has been a good year," said Toms, who earned a spot on the United States
Ryder Cup team with his win at the PGA.
"And winning this week is extra special because of the way I played last
week."
Only Tiger Woods (five) has as many titles this year as Toms, who has moved
into the top 10 in the world rankings.
Triplett matched the best round of the day with a 65 and finished alone in
second at 14-under 270. Charles Howell and Esteban Toledo of Mexico tied at
271.
Len Mattiace was fifth at 274, a stroke better than JJ Henry and two ahead of
a group of five that included Neal Lancaster.
With five events remaining this season, Lancaster is one of a handful of PGA
Tour members fighting to retain their tour cards by finishing in the top 125 on
the money list. He earned £68,750 to jump from 135th to 112th.
Michael Muehr also made a move by tying for seventh. His cheque for £68,750
improved his standing 19 spots to 122nd. Rich Beem collected the same amount and
moved from 122nd to 97th.
