Australian Robert Allenby carded a four-under-par 68 to win his second PGA Tour title of the season and fourth of his career at the Pennsylvania Classic.

Australian Allenby took a three-shot lead into the final round at the weather-plagued event and retained that advantage on the final day to collect the £400,000 top prize.

Rochdale's Edward Fryatt shot a second successive 73, despite four birdies, to finish tied 52nd, while Sweden's Per-Ulrik Johansson, the leading European, also had a disappointing final round. His closing 73 left him tied 33rd on four under.

Titles have been commonplace for Allenby but claiming them in regulation has not.

Each of his first three PGA Tour wins - all since April 2000 - came in play-offs, and he has won all seven of his career play-offs worldwide.

Allenby joined exclusive company, becoming the third Tour member to win four titles in the past two seasons. The others are Tiger Woods (14) and Phil Mickelson (six).

After bogeying the 72nd hole for a 19-under-par 269, Allenby was greeted by golf legend Arnold Palmer, a Pennsylvania native who was responsible for bringing a PGA Tour event to the Laurel Valley Golf Club.

Former Masters champion Larry Mize matched the low round of the day with a seven-under 65 and tied local favourite Rocco Mediate for second place at 16-under 272.

Eleven players were forced to return to the course yesterday morning to complete their third rounds after rain and fog hampered play over the first three days of the event.
