Former US Amateur champion David Gossett shot a final round five-under-par 66 to beat Briny Baird by a shot and claim the USPGA John Deere Classic in Illinois.

Gossett sank a five-foot par putt at the 18th hole to become the 15th first-time winner in the 30-year history of the event.

"I feel great," he said. "To make that putt on the last hole and shoot 5-under-par and hang on and even play this week was great."

Gossett became the first sponsor's exemption to win since Tiger Woods at the 1996 Las Vegas Invitational.

Baird, who pressed Gossett throughout the final round, missed a 25-foot birdie putt at the 18th hole en route to a 66 and a career-best finish.

He was alone in second at 18-under 266.

Pete Jordan finished third at 17-under 267, a stroke ahead of Jeff Sluman and two better than Matt Gogel and Ian Leggatt.

Briton Ed Fryatt shot a one-over-par 72 and slid down the leaderboard to finish joint 14th.
