Jeff Sluman battled Tour rookie Paul Gow all the way before making an
eight-foot birdie putt in sudden death to win the B.C. Open.
It was a first career play-off win for Sluman who had lost the first five
times he had gone to extra holes.
His 0-6 record in play-offs was the second-worst in PGA Tour history,
surpassed only by Ben Crenshaw's 0-8.
"It makes me feel good to win a play-off," said Sluman, who blew a
two-stroke lead on the final hole of regulation play.
"I was 0-6 here and also lost one in Japan as well."
The 43-year-old, whose first tour victory in 1988 came when Gow was 17 years
old, began the final round tied with Gow and ended it the same way after both
players fired six-under-par 66s and set records at the En-Joie Golf Club.
Jonathan Kaye shot a 67 and was alone in third at 19-under 269, one shot
better than Jay Haas, who carded a 68.
Steve Pate shot a 66 and was fifth at 17-under 271, one stroke better than
Stephen Ames and Jim McGovern.
Ames fired a 63 for the best round of the day.
Amateur Ty Tryon, a 17-year-old high school junior, shot a 70 and tied for
37th at nine-under 279.
