| The big Fijian is not quite the force he was in 2004-5 when he knocked Tiger Woods off the top of the world rankings for 32 consecutive weeks - he is now down at number seven. A rarity in that he has played by far his best golf since turning 40 four years ago, Singh is renowned for his relentless practice routines. If hard work ever made nearly-perfect, this is the evidence for it. Of course, long hours on the practice ground can groove a swing, but it does not have quite the same effect on the putting stroke. He would surely have won more than his three majors (two USPGAs and a Masters) if he could have mastered the art of short-to-medium range putting. Singh missed the cut at Medinah last year, which was a big surprise after three top 10s, including a win (2004), in his previous four USPGAs. As you would expect from a player who hits loads of fairways and greens but misses too many putts, his major form this season is steady if unspectacular with three top 30s and nothing better than a tie for 13th at Augusta. Tied for seventh at Southern Hills in 2001 after a closing 64. |
