| The former world number one has been on the slide since injuring his knee in a boating accident two years ago and has not won in the United States since 2004, or anywhere outside his native South Africa since 2005. He has shown signs of a return to form this season and flirted with the lead at Carnoustie on Sunday afternoon, before slipping back into a share of fourth. It seems almost impossible that a player this good has only won three majors - and just one in the last 10 years; the 2002 Open at Muirfield. Since the turn of the millennium, the Big Easy has had 14 top five finishes in the majors, and if he plays to his potential he can win this week. He is also in decent form, preceding his good showing at Carnoustie with a brilliant Sunday charge into third at the Scottish Open. The downside is that Els appears not to have the inner steel to be a serial major-winner, plus the USPGA is by far his worst event of the four. He has had just three top fives in 15 starts. Els finished down the field in the 2001 US Open at Southern Hills but he was sixth in the 1996 Tour Championship held there. |
