Graeme McDowell today described himself as "50-50" for the US PGA
championship starting on Thursday after suffering injuries in a recent car crash.
The 26-year-old from Portrush in Northern Ireland, joint 11th in the Open last
month, went straight in for treatment on his arrival at Baltusrol this morning.
McDowell originally felt pain in his ribcage after the accident, but after
some treatment for that a problem with his upper back was found.
Among those interested in whether he played or not was England's Justin Rose,
who flew from Florida to New Jersey after moving up to second reserve on
Tuesday.
Rose said: "This is the second major running I've been on standby and it
would be very frustrating if I don't make it again."
He ended up as second reserve for the Open after a number of withdrawals and
flew from London to Scotland in the hope of playing, but then had to return home.
McDowell emerged from his latest session of treatment to say he will delay a
decision on whether he plays until as late as possible. He does not tee off
until 1.20pm local time tomorrow.
He was a back seat passenger in the collision nearly three weeks ago and the
injury has prevented him practising on the course at all this week.
However, he has been able to hit some balls on the driving range.
