CASEY SLAMS CRUEL COURSE
By Mark Garrod, PA Sport Golf Correspondent, Rochester
England's Paul Casey slammed the set-up of Oak Hill today after finishing the
United States PGA championship at 19 over par and saying: "I need a padded
cell."
Following a closing 76 the 26-year-old commented: "It was pretty horrible to
be honest and I'm not afraid to say that that is really boring - not enjoyable
whatsoever.
"I've a hard time understanding why they (the organising PGA of America) want
par to be a winning score. My golf is to go at pins and attack, but when it's
like this I've got to alter my thinking and learn to plod away.
"But I would sign a petition asking that other courses are not set up like
this."
Ferocious rough lining the fairways and around the greens has been the feature
of the final major of the season and sub-par rounds have been priceless all
week.
Casey had one of them in the second round, a 69 which by the skin of the teeth
enabled him to make his first halfway cut in five majors.
But he was critical of the fact that anybody missing the fairway by six inches
was "stuffed", whereas those who were wilder had a chance of finishing on
grass trampled down by fans and therefore more chance of advancing the ball.
"The 69 was pure grinding," he said. "I'm praying that next week's course
is different. I've finished in an ambulance the last two days."
Casey, who moves on to Akron for the NEC world championship, double-bogeyed
the 17th and bogeyed the last in his third round 75 and then in the final round
bogeyed the 15th, double-bogeyed the 16th and bogeyed the last two holes.
