Another turbulent episode in the life of former Open champion John Daly is
unfolding. But this time it is his wife who is at the centre of the drama.
Daly plays in this week's United States PGA championship at Oak Hill in
Rochester, New York, just two weeks after his fourth wife Sherrie and her
parents were indicted on drug and illegal gambling charges.
The 37-year-old American star, who had become a father for the third time just
before, admits to being in shock.
A 20-year jail term is possible for the charges, which relate to a conspiracy
to buy and sell cocaine, marijuana and other illegal drugs between 1996 and last
year.
Daly's regular caddie left him on his arrival at Oak Hill over the matter,
while the player was quoted in the local Democrat and Chronicle newspaper as
saying: "It's not fair to kick someone down when they've not proven anything.
"I just have to wait and see what happens."
A shock winner of the US PGA in 1991, Daly has twice undergone rehabilitation
for alcoholism and lost millions gambling.
His last win was the BMW International in Germany two years ago - just after
he married Sherrie.
