Former world number one Greg Norman hopes he will be able to defy the pain and
put up a good performance at this week's PGA Championship, the final Major of
the season.
Norman has had an injection from his personal physician to try and overcome
back pain and tomorrow will hit balls to see how he is standing up.
All being well Norman, who pulled out of the International Tournament in the
final round with back pain on Sunday, will be able to take up his invitation.
"I am going to do everything I can over the next couple days to prepare for
the PGA Championship," said Norman.
"I am very thankful that the PGA of America granted me a special exemption,
and it is my sincere hope that I will be able to perform to my level of
satisfaction at Oak Hill."
Norman has been grouped with Spain's Sergio Garcia and Scott Verplank of the
United States for the first two rounds.
Another interesting match sees the three 2003 Major winners grouped together
for the first two rounds.
Canada's Masters champion Mike Weir, US Open winner Jim Furyk and Open
champion Ben Curtis were all drawn together and Curtis - a rank outsider when he
won at Sandwich last month - will be aiming to maintain a 100% record in
Majors.
Tiger Woods, who will have his last chance to win a Major this year, also has
an interesting match as he has been drawn with David Toms and outgoing champion
Rich Beem.
