USPGA PROFILE
Els joined an exclusive club after taking his majors tally to three by winning the Open in a dramatic play-off at Muirfield last month. That added to his two US Open wins in 1994 and 1997 and put him halfway to a career grand slam. Els would love to complete the third leg of it by winning the USPGA although his record in the year's final major is moderate. Only once has he threatened to win although he must still wonder how he didn't after blowing a three-shot lead on the final day at Riviera in 1995. But with his confidence flowing the South African with the smooth swing could be a big factor.
