DOLBY EQUALS UNWANTED RECORD

Ryder Cup Welshman Phillip Price witnessed a piece of history on Friday - without
knowing it.
While Price missed the halfway cut in the United States PGA championship at
Hazeltine National after following his opening 76 with a nightmare 83, playing
partner Tom Dalby equalled the worst round ever in the event.
The 40-year-old, one of 25 club professionals taking part, had a 10 on the
405-yard sixth and a nine at the long 15th in returning a 22-over-par 94 in the
second round.
It matched the first round of Gary Campbell in 1977, but in Dolby's defence he
did have a back injury and admitted afterwards he should have withdrawn.
Dolby, holder of three course records (for low scores, that is), had already
shot a first round 85 and so finished with a 35-over-par aggregate of 179.
"If I had been healthy and shot these scores I would have been more upset and
more embarrased," he said. "I feel sorry for the alternate (reserve) who did
not get in. It wasn't fair to him.
"Every time I bent over I got the spasms even worse. These are by far my
worst two-round ever in competition that I can remember.
"I guess my pride got in the way. I had my family and in-laws coming in.
There is something seriously wrong - it feels like I have a rib out of joint or
something.
"On Tuesday night I was in tears. I couldn't breathe."
Price played the back nine in a horror 43 himself, taking a triple bogey on
the 16th, and bogeyed all four of the par fives.
With his Ryder Cup debut only six weeks away now, he will try to rebuild
confidence at next week's NEC world championship in Seattle.
That is the event he finished second to Tiger Woods in two years ago.
