The US Open is set to return to Oakmont Country Club, Pennsylvania, in 2016 for a record ninth time.

Oakmont staged the US Open for the eighth time since it opened in 1903 two years ago when Argentina's Angel Cabrera held off Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk to win the first major of his career.

Previous winners at the renowned Henry C Fownes' course near Pittsburgh include some of the game's greatest names, Tommy Armour (1927), Ben Hogan (1953), Jack Nicklaus (1962), Johnny Miller (1973) and Ernie Els (1994).

"The USGA is extremely pleased to continue our long-standing relationship with Oakmont Country Club," USGA President Jim Vernon said on the eve of the 109th US Open at Bethpage Black, New York.

"As evident from the results of the 2007 championship, the course is a wonderful and complete test of golf. Equally important is the fact that since the early 1900s, Oakmont has been a proud supporter of the game.

"The USGA remains grateful that we have been invited back to conduct our 16th championship, which includes our recent visits in 2003 for the US Amateur and in 2007 for the US Open, as well as next year's US Women's Open."

Before it reaches Oakmont again, the US Open is be played next year at Pebble Beach in California, Congressional Country Club in Maryland in 2011, San Francisco's The Olympic Club in 2012, Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania in 2013; Pinehurst No.2, North Carolina in 2014 and Chambers Bay in Washington State in 2015.
