Geoff Ogilvy has gone from solid tournament player to major winner. The Australian was the surprise champion at Winged Foot last year holding his nerve down a dramatic 18th hole that saw Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie come to grief when apparently poised to take the title. Ogilvy had been gradually building a reputation over the previous 18 months by winning the WGC-Accenture World Match Play in 2006 and he reached the final again this year. He suffered his own traumatic problems at the US Masters in April when finding the water at the 15th hole when moving into contention ahead of the weekend. As defending champion, the pressure is on him now but he heads to Oakmont in good spirits after celebrating his 30th birthday on Monday. Tied for 117th in the St Jude Championship on latest start.
