Montgomerie came within a whisker of winning this event 12 months ago and thus finally ridding himself of the 'best player never to win a major' tag. He returns to the scene of his defeat in an 18-hole playoff 13 years ago and perhaps he will be inspired again, although this is going to prove a much tougher Oakmont in comparison. The fire still burns for Monty and there will be few players in the field more capable if the event becomes the predicted war of attrition but continuing frustrations on the greens could be his Achilles heel yet again.
