US OPEN PROFILE
With his 27th birthday come and gone, Sergio Garcia can no longer be regarded as the 'boy wonder' who many thought was a 'major' winner in making at the start of the century. The big prize has constantly eluded the mercurial Spaniard who would surely have won the 1999 USPGA Championship as a teenager if he had not had to go head-to-head with Tiger Woods over the final nine holes. His US Open record is respectable with a third place behind Michael Campbell at Pinehurst in 2005 and a fourth behind Tiger Woods at the monster Bethpage Black in 2002. Flopped at the Masters in April but kick-started a moderate year by chasing home Phil Mickelson with a final round 66 at the PLAYERS Championship. Has the touch of genius to compete at the highest level.
