Retief Goosen (69): "Well, we said at the beginning of the week we probably expect nobody to be under par. Yeah, I'll go out and play solid tomorrow, I suppose I have a good chance. It's not easy to make up ground on this course, it's easy to lose ground. I don't know what the weather is going to be like tomorrow. But if I just keep playing solid, probably shoot 1 or 2 over, I can probably win."
Peter Jacobsen (69): (After hole-in-one at the 9th) "As it left the club it was right on line. At first I thought it might have hit the flag and gone over, but the fans then raised their arms like 'touchdown'. If I said I thought I could win coming in here I'd be lying, but I thought I could make the cut."
David Toms (70): "I was disappointed with my tee shots today. The putter felt good and the irons felt good, but it was a struggle for me off the tee today. I didn't miss it by much, but I had them going a little left. It's tough to play this golf course when you can't get in the fairway."
Jason Gore (72): "I think today was a big test. And I didn't play my greatest, but it happens. And I hung in there. I made some very key putts that you have to make, you know, to play well in the U.S. Open. And you take a little bit off that and maybe tomorrow won't be as bad as today was. Hopefully I'm a quick learner, it will get through my thick old skull."
Olin Browne (72): "I played horribly today. The front nine was atrocious. But somehow scooped it around. And it seems it's a funny day, because my errant shots ended up in not a bad place, and my bad shots ended up in a horrible place. So it was kind of backwards. But like I say, I'm hanging."
Tiger Woods (72): "It's a grind out there. You have to hit quality golf shots. I had 36 putts today. And most of my putts I'm defensive, because they're uphill and then going straight away from me. I'm one good round away from winning this championship, that's the way you have to approach it. Tomorrow I'm going to give it my best and see what happens."
Phil Mickelson (72): "I played great today. I hit a lot of good shots. I drove it the best I have in a long time. The thing is you just can't make any birdies out here or try to make birdies. And today the pins were so close to the edges that not only was I not trying to get it close with my irons, I was being very careful with my putts not to putt it off the green. So it was a very tough day."
Colin Montgomerie (72): "Anything
under par here is tremendous. The pins are in very difficult spots and the greens are drying out. I just can't wait to play the ninth hole at St Andrews (venue of next
month's Open). You can hit it anywhere and it will be such a relief. But there is a way round this course and I was doing it for 12 holes. I've never seen a pin like the one of the 13th. From there in it's very, very difficult."
Lee Westwood (73): "It's the fairest most draining golf course I've played in a while. I felt drained when I walked off at Shinnecock last year, but it was frustrating more than anything. But this year it's been fantastic and very fair and you've got exactly what you deserved out there."
