| US OPEN PROFILE |
 |
| The dominant force in the sport defends the title he won 12 months ago on the Black Course at Bethpage State and seeks his third US Open title in four years. Despite easing his way into 2003 after off-season surgery on a troublesome knee problem, Woods has managed three wins from seven starts and is yet to finish outside the top 15 on the other four. Still only 27, it is hard to believe the phenomenal heights he has scaled already and the way in which he has raised the bar for his peers in the modern era of the game. Woods has the ability to look unbeatable at times as a 15-shot win in this event in 2000 illustrated. Many players back off from the intense pressure of Major championship golf but Woods thrives on it and has an ability to lift his game an extra notch as a haul of eight such titles to date reveals. He has looked slightly less indestructible in recent weeks but fired a warning shot to the field when he finished the Memorial Tournament with a round of 65. Although capable of muscling his way around any 18 holes, there is no better strategist, a quality that will not be lost on perhaps the toughest course set-up the players will encounter all year. He plays with great patience, rarely makes poor decisions (this year's Masters excepted) and is the complete package when all cylinders are firing. |
