US OPEN PROFILE
Toms took his place among the golfing elite by winning the USPGA Championship at Atlanta Country Club in 2001. To followers of the man from Louisiana it didn't come as a shock. The 36-year-old has been one of the most improved players in the game over the last few years, notching up eight US Tour wins. The most recent was at the inaugural Wachovia Championship when he still won by two shots after taking an eight(!) up the final hole. Toms can be a little hard to predict - he follows seemingly good form with a missed cut or emerges from a lean spell with a win. His record to date here is not particularly inspiring but if he takes to the course he has the game to make an impact. His mild-mannered personality disguises an extremely tenacious competitor who is tough to shake off or pass when he has his sights on the top prize.
