US OPEN PROFILE
The Big Easy already has two US Open titles on his CV and a return to his early-season form would make a third more than a distinct possibility. He has been plagued by a wrist injury and illness over the past couple of weeks and it is hoped he is back to full fitness as this event will expose any flaws even in the best players. A change of equipment at the end of 2002 yielded immediate dividends as he began the new year with two wins in Hawaii and two in Australia and he remains probably the most international of the top echelon of players. That form unsurprisingly levelled out but it would be no shock to see him right back in the firing line again at an event that clearly suits his game. Immensely powerful and a wonderful iron player, Els just needs his share of luck on the greens for a big week.
