US OPEN PROFILE
The smooth-swinging Couples has re-dedicated himself to the game in 2003 and the results have been dramatic. After slumping to 103rd on the Money List in 2002, Freddie has climbed back into the top 15, with the highlight an emotional victory at the Shell Houston Open. That was Couples' first US Tour win since 1998 and reminded his rivals, and indeed himself, that he's still capable of great things. The US Open isn't really his favourite tournament though and you have to go back to Hazeltine in 1991 to find his last top ten. Even with his confidence restored, a Couples win would come as a surprise this week.
