MONTGOMERIE KEEPS HIS COUNSEL

By Mark Garrod, PA Sport Golf Correspondent, Chicago

Just when he might have thought it was all over Colin Montgomerie was reminded today that not every American golf fan has decided to leave him alone.

"Cheer up - you could have a real job," said a spectator as Montgomerie walked through to sign his fourth round card in the United States Open at Olympia Fields near Chicago.

Wisely the 39-year-old Scot, who had finished well down the field on six over par after a closing 72, did not respond.

And nor did he choose to speak to waiting reporters. "Nope - not today," was the message relayed by United States Golf Association officials.

Montgomerie is still waiting for his first major title and next month's Open will be his 49th attempt - 51st if you include the two Opens he tried to qualify for and failed.
