Colin Montgomerie broke his run of missed cuts on Friday. But that was the only
good thing to say about a second round 74 at the United States Open.
Montgomerie, in the hunt at one under par overnight, made it through with
absolutely nothing to say at three over.
It was a real struggle in the end. The 39-year-old Scot, who has crashed out
early of his last two European tour events, had three successive bogeys after
the turn and then another at the 15th to be borderline for survival.
However, he sank a 12-foot par putt on the 16th and finished with two pars to
make it through to the weekend 10 adrift of leaders Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk.
He then sent a message to waiting reporters that he was too tired to talk.
Padraig Harrington disappointed as well. Also one under after an opening 69,
he shot 72 to be one over, the same as Justin Rose (71).
"I was not hitting it great, but I managed to keep it under control until my
putting went on the last nine holes," said the Dubliner. "By the end I didn't
know where it was going to go.
"I was trying to limit the damage and tee to green I did. But I missed four
chances for birdies and two par putts as well."
Nick Faldo, Paul Casey and Paul Lawrie did miss the cut, while Darren Clarke
added a 69 to his opening 70 to stand one under and joint 18th.
