US OPEN PROFILE
With its emphasis on straight driving, the US Open will always represent Monty's best chance of breaking his Majors duck. And he could already have won it three times. On his debut at Pebble Beach in 1992, Jack Nicklaus had already congratulated him on his success after it appeared that his early clubhouse score would stand up with the weather conditions turning brutal. It didn't and he finished third. Two years later he lost out to Ernie Els after a three-man 18-hole play-off and the South African denied him again in 1997 after Monty bogeyed the 17th. Monty's terse relationship with US crowds is the fly in the ointment and to combat the heckling Golf Digest are issuing spectators with "Be Nice To Monty" badges. If the crowds lay off him and his troublesome back holds out then the Scot's impressive recent form suggests he could be Europe's best bet again.
