Furyk has just the sort of steady game to succeed in a US Open and back-to-back top fives in 1996 and 1997 followed by two top 20s highlights the point. But until recently the man with the loopy swing wouldn't have been on many shortlists after a wretched run of form. Furyk, completely out of character, missed four cuts in six starts across March, April and May although an ear infection which caused dizzy spells was partly to blame. But anyone writing him off was put in their place when he produced a final round charge to capture the Memorial last month. He's followed that up with a top ten in the Buick Classic so looks primed to make a challenge.
