Goosen showed amazing mental strength to win last year's US Open after missing a two-footer for the championship on the final hole. Fighting demons that would have destroyed lesser men, Goosen came back the next day to beat Mark Brooks in a play-off to not only gave him his first major but launch a spectacular upturn in a career that had seemed stuck in second gear. Since his win in Tulsa, the shy South African has won six more times, becoming the first non-European to win the Order of Merit since Greg Norman in 1982, earning over £3million and climbing into the world's top five. The hotstreak, which included a second place at this year's Masters, has cooled off in the last few months but a tied 25th in last week's Buick Classic hints at a return to form and a strong defence.
