US OPEN PROFILE
As a two-time US Open champion, Els could be Tiger Woods' biggest rival at Bethpage. The laid-back South African gained his first triumph at a sweltering Oakmont in 1994. But he needed a thrilling 18-hole play-off against Colin Montgomerie and Loren Roberts on the Monday and even then Roberts took the battle to the second extra hole after both tied on 74. Monty was again one of Els' last-day victims in 1997 along with third-round leader Tom Lehman when a superb approach to the difficult 17th at the Congressional Club in Maryland secured his second crown. Els also finished a distant second to Woods in 2000 so if he can find his 'A' game he should be challenging at the finish.
