After an 11-month barren spell, Clarke splashed his way to a three-stroke victory in the Compass Group English Open last week - the perfect boost for his latest bid for Major glory. The Ulsterman will be paired with Woods for the first two rounds and although many have wilted in Tiger's company in Majors, Clarke is the sort who could flourish. His best US Open finish is a tied tenth in 1999 but he must have a chance on improving that this week. Clarke used the same putter with which he beat Woods in the final of the World Match Play Championship in California two years ago during his English Open triumph so that could prove a good omen. If he can track Tiger early on he has the talent to launch a serious bid over the weekend.
