US MASTERS PROFILE
After starting the year with a personal commitment to lay down a challenge to Tiger Woods' world No1 status, the Big Easy has not set the fairways alight so far. A tied third at the Nissan Open remains his best display in America though he was in the chasing pack at Doral before finishing a full seven shots behind nemesis Woods. Els has always threatened at Augusta and boasts a clutch of top-10 finishes including finishing runner-up to Phil Mickelson in 2004. He was a distant 27th behind Mickelson last year but was perhaps still not quite 100 percent after undergoing surgery on a knee injury in 2005. The amiable South African will undoubtedly figure this week if his short game is sharp.
