Appleby's combination of big hitting and excellent short game should be an ideal fit for Augusta but his Masters record is something of a disappointment. Last year's tied 19th was the first time he'd cracked the top 20 in 10 appearances and five of those had ended in missed cuts. The jury remains out on whether he'll ever be a genuine Masters contender but three successive Mercedes Championship between 2004 and 2006 highlight that he is capable of beating the very best. The Shell Houston Open is another of his favourite events and the switch to the week before the Masters - and another excellent display - should mean his confidence is absolutely spot on.
